Born and raised in the Northwoods, Ruahdan (pronounced 'Rowan') Anathei lost his parents in early adulthood when a rampaging flight of dragons attacked their home. He was left with no kin but his young sister Sharina, and no way to support the both of them.

Maren Alvenon, a distant cousin of their mother's, heard about the situation and offered a place within her home to the siblings; Ruadhan accepted her hospitality on his sister's behalf, but couldn't bear to live within city walls himself. Ranger-trained, he offered his skills as tracker and scout to several adventuring parties, hoping to gain sufficient funds to rebuild his home.

While he worked toward that goal, Sharina fell in love with Maren's son, Galen, who would eventually be Laranica's Ruling Prince. However, before the two could be wed, a deranged palace maid who believed she should be Galen's mate poisoned Sharina, killing her.

Ruadhan blamed himself for her death as much as he did the Alvenons; they had all failed to protect the girl. But when he heard of Galen's engagement to another young woman less than twenty years after Shari's passing, he got angry and traveled back to the city to confront the prince.
